You are the universe, expressing itself as a human for a little while
But we can substantially reduce our stress by recognizing that in many situations, we have become perfectionists in realms where perfection isn’t necessary, realistic, or even useful.
How are you doing?
Alright. How are you?
What’s wrong that you’re just “alright”?
Nothing. Just nothing great has happened today.
Any day that nothing bad happens, it should be great. Look at who you’re around, friends, family, etc. Isn’t that all it takes to be great?
*After a moment of thinking* Hey, I am pretty good today.
Indeed! Sometimes OK is in fact awesome.
fMRI findings from male and female participants showed that neural activity in the medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate, and temporal poles was greatly reduced only when viewing sexualized women. In other words, the brain regions that normally become active when one engages in a social interaction with another individual that they recognize is a human being, were active in men when they viewed clothed women, but not active when viewing sexualized women. It’s quite interesting how selective the sexualization effect was in that it was dehumanizing only for the women but not for the men.
So, basically, our ‘social control centers’ shut off when looking at sexualized women. One can ask if that’s something we learn from the culture we’re in, given that brains adapt heavily to the circumstances.
I’m glad that scientists are digging into this. Due to neuroplasticity, one wonders if this is a learned behavior that can be broken or an actual wiring problem that requires extensive repair. This also makes me wonder if folks who grow up in a culture that doesn’t not treat women so react similarly - I would think not.
